Technical Details

What Is RTV-1 Silicone?

RTV-1 (Room Temperature Vulcanization, one-component) silicone is a pre-catalyzed sealant that cures by reacting with atmospheric moisture. Supplied ready-to-use in cartridges, tubes, or foil packs, it requires no mixing — simply extrude, apply, and allow to cure at ambient conditions. This simplicity makes RTV-1 the dominant silicone sealant in construction, electronics, and general maintenance.

Cure Chemistry: Acetoxy, Oxime, and Alkoxy Types

The cure mechanism determines by-products, cure speed, and substrate compatibility:

Acetoxy (acid-cure): The most common and cost-effective type. Releases acetic acid during cure, producing the characteristic vinegar odor. Excellent adhesion to glass, ceramic, and aluminum. Not suitable for copper, zinc, or calcareous stone (marble, limestone) as acetic acid can corrode or stain these substrates. Skin-over time 5–10 minutes; full cure 24–48 hours (depth dependent).

Oxime (neutral cure): Releases butanone oxime. Suitable for most metals including copper and zinc. The standard type for electrical and electronics encapsulation where corrosive by-products must be avoided. Moderate cure speed.

Alkoxy (neutral cure): Releases methanol or ethanol. Excellent adhesion without priming on a wide range of substrates. Lower odor than acetoxy. The premium type for sensitive substrates and architectural applications where long-term aesthetics matter.

Cure Speed and Depth Limitations

RTV-1 is a moisture-cure system: cure initiates from the exposed surface and progresses inward. Practical depth of cure is approximately 3–5 mm per 24 hours under standard conditions (23 °C, 50% RH). Thick cross-sections (>10 mm) may require days to weeks for full cure throughout. Temperature and humidity accelerate cure; low humidity or cold temperatures significantly slow it. RTV-2 two-component systems are preferred where rapid through-cure in thick sections is needed.

Applications

Construction glazing and curtain wall: Structural and non-structural silicone glazing per EN 15434 / ASTM C1184. Neutral-cure alkoxy types are specified for structural silicone glazing (SSG) systems on high-rise facades.

Sanitary and kitchen joints: White and colored acetoxy-cure grades for bathroom and kitchen joints. Fungicide-enhanced grades resist mold growth in humid environments.

Electronics and electrical: Oxime or alkoxy types for potting small components, sealing connector boots, and encapsulating PCB edge connectors where copper tracks must not be corroded.

General maintenance: Acetoxy types for general-purpose bonding of glass, ceramics, and metals in maintenance and repair applications.

How to Specify RTV-1

Key parameters: cure chemistry (acetoxy/oxime/alkoxy), Shore hardness after cure, elongation at break, movement accommodation class (for construction use), color, and certifications (LFGB/FDA if food-contact). For structural glazing, specify compliance with EN 15434 or ASTM C1184 and request ETA (European Technical Approval) documentation.
