Silicone Rubber (siblings)
Translucent Silicone Rubber
Translucent silicone rubber allows diffused light transmission, providing a milky-white or frosted appearance. Preferred where some light diffusion is desirable and full optical clarity is not required, such as LED diffusers, sealing strips, and decorative parts.

What Is Translucent Silicone Rubber?
Translucent silicone rubber allows diffused light transmission rather than the direct light transmission of transparent (clear) grades. The result is a milky-white, frosted, or opal appearance with light transmittance ranging from 30% to 80% depending on compound formulation and section thickness. This light-scattering property is created by the silica filler particle size and loading level rather than by adding an opacifying agent.
Translucent silicone occupies the visual space between fully transparent silicone (≥90% transmittance, clear appearance) and fully opaque white silicone (no light transmission). It is the preferred appearance for applications where visible light diffusion is a functional requirement, where a soft white aesthetic is desired, or where full clarity is not needed but full opacity is undesirable.
Optical Characteristics
Unlike transparent grades where clarity depends on minimizing scattering, translucent grades use controlled scattering to achieve even, uniform light diffusion. Key optical parameters:
- Transmittance: 30–80% (varies with thickness and filler level)
- Haze: High by design (60–95%) — this is the desired diffusion effect
- Appearance: Milky-white to frosted opal, consistent across the part
The silicone base (PDMS) is inherently non-yellowing, meaning the milky-white translucent appearance remains stable through thermal aging and UV exposure that would discolor organic polymers.
Key Applications
LED light diffuser strips and covers: Translucent silicone tubing and profiles are used as LED diffuser covers, replacing polycarbonate or polystyrene diffusers in applications requiring flexibility, high-temperature resistance, and UV stability. The controlled scattering eliminates LED hotspots and provides even light output.
Kitchen utensil handles and soft grips: Translucent silicone overmolds on kitchen tool handles provide a hygienic, easy-clean surface with a premium frosted appearance that does not show fingerprints as clearly as transparent surfaces.
Window sealing strips with aesthetic translucency: Extruded translucent profiles for aluminum-frame window systems provide a clean architectural appearance while allowing some diffused daylight transmission through the seal cross-section.
Soft-touch button overlays: Consumer electronics and medical device button overlays using translucent silicone allow backlight from underlying LEDs to diffuse evenly through the button legend area.
Decorative and lifestyle parts: Watch bands, earphone tips, and phone cases where the frosted matte appearance is a deliberate design choice distinct from both clear and colored variants.
Pigmenting Translucent Silicone
Translucent base compound can be tinted with low loading (0.1–0.5 wt%) of transparent silicone dyes (not opaque pigments) to create pastel colors — light blue, light pink, pale yellow — that maintain the translucent character. Adding opaque pigment masterbatch at 1–3 wt% transitions the appearance to semi-opaque. The wide starting-point palette makes translucent silicone highly flexible for product color design.
