Two Silicon Streams in Rubber
Silicon enters the rubber industry through two distinct routes: precipitated silica as a reinforcing filler in organic rubber compounds, and silicone rubber as a base polymer for specialty applications. Both are growing markets, driven by tire performance regulations and electrification.
HD Silica in Green Tires
Highly dispersible (HD) precipitated silica replaced carbon black as the reinforcing filler of choice in high-performance passenger car tires in the 1990s (the "green tire" revolution). Silica-filled treads — coupled with silane coupling agents — deliver:
- Rolling resistance reduction of 20–30% vs carbon black (better fuel economy / EV range)
- Wet grip improvement of 10–15%
- Snow traction benefit (SiOH surface affinity for ice)

The bifunctional silane coupling agent (typically TESPT — bis(triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide) covalently bonds silica particles to the rubber matrix during mixing. Without silane coupling, silica agglomerates and weakens the compound.
Precipitated silica for tire applications requires controlled BET surface area (140–200 m²/g), high dispersibility (CTAB/BET ratio), and low moisture before mixing.
Silicone Rubber Applications
Silicone rubber serves demanding specialty rubber markets where organic rubbers fail:
- Automotive — spark plug boots, ignition cables, coolant hoses (−60°C to +230°C)
- Electrical — insulation for high-voltage cables, busbar boots
- Industrial — O-rings, diaphragms, gaskets in chemical processing
- Food contact — FDA-compliant tubing, baking moulds, baby products
