Silicone Sealant Chemistry Types

Silicone sealants are formulated with different cure chemistries that determine substrate compatibility, VOC emission, and application domain. Acetoxy-cure (acid cure) systems release acetic acid during cure, producing a characteristic vinegar odor. They deliver fast tack-free times of 15–30 minutes and strong adhesion to glass at low cost. However, the acetic acid byproduct corrodes metals and neutralizes calcareous substrates such as marble and concrete, excluding these cure types from structural metal or masonry applications.

Neutral-cure oxime systems release methyl ethyl ketoxime as the cure byproduct. With no acid byproduct, corrosion is eliminated and adhesion extends to virtually all construction substrates. Oxime-cure silicone is the dominant choice for curtain wall and structural glazing. Neutral-cure alkoxy systems release methanol and are preferred in confined or low-ventilation spaces due to very low VOC output. Alkoxy-cure silicones also offer excellent UV resistance for exterior weatherproofing.

Structural Glazing Requirements

Structural glazing demands the highest mechanical performance from a sealant. Two-component RTV-2 structural silicone (equivalents to Dow 795 and Sika SG-20) must deliver tensile strength >0.6 MPa and elongation at break >150%. Design bite width is calculated such that the sealant bead width equals or exceeds the nominal joint width to achieve ±25% movement capability without cohesive failure.

Adhesion testing on the actual project substrate is mandatory before specification; no generalized adhesion table replaces coupon testing on the specified glass, stone, or metal. Full cure to structural strength requires 14–21 days at 23 °C and 50% RH. Joints must not be loaded before full cure is confirmed.

Durability and Standards

Silicone sealants tested to ISO 11600 must complete 10,000 extension/compression cycles at ±12.5% without cohesive failure in the sealant body. UV resistance requirements specify no chalking and <5% tensile strength loss after 1000 h xenon-arc exposure per ISO 4892-2. When correctly applied to clean, properly primed joints with a neutral-cure silicone, expected service life is 25–30 years — substantially longer than polyurethane or polysulfide alternatives.

Proper joint preparation remains the primary determinant of sealant life. Substrate cleaning to remove dust, oils, and old sealant, followed by appropriate primer application where required, accounts for the majority of sealant field failures when omitted.
