Where Silicon Materials Fit in Construction

Construction is the largest single industry consumer of silicone sealants globally and a major user of silane-based water-repellent treatments and silicone-modified architectural coatings. Three subdomains drive demand:

Curtain wall and structural glazing: high-rise commercial construction uses two-component structural silicone glazing (SSG) sealants to bond glass directly to aluminum mullions without back-up mechanical fixings. The dominant market is commercial offices and hotels in major cities globally; specifications follow ETAG 002 (Europe) or ASTM C1184 (US/international).

Weatherproofing and movement-joint sealing: single-component neutral-cure silicone sealants per GB 16776 / ASTM C920 fill perimeter joints around windows and doors, expansion joints in walls and floors, and panel-to-panel seams in metal-clad and ceramic-tile facades. Premium grades offer +/-50% movement capability and 25-year color stability.

Stone, concrete, and masonry water repellency: silane impregnation (typically isobutyl- or iso-octyl-trimethoxysilane at 5-15% active solution) penetrates 2-10 mm into porous mineral substrates, providing breathable hydrophobicity that lasts 10-20 years. The treatment is critical for facades in freeze-thaw climates and historic-building restoration.

Specifications and Standards

For structural-glazing sealants, ETAG 002 / ASTM C1184 specify:

  • Minimum tensile strength after weathering (typically 0.5 MPa)
  • Movement capability +/-25% under thermal cycling
  • 30-year design life
  • Approved manufacturer list (project-specific)

For construction sealants generally, GB 16776 (China) and ASTM C920 (US/international) cover:

  • Movement capability classification (Class 25, Class 50)
  • Weathering resistance (ASTM C1442, 1500-5000 hour QUV)
  • Adhesion to common substrates (glass, aluminum, concrete, treated wood)

For concrete impregnation, EN 1504-2 Class 1 (hydrophobic impregnation) requires water-vapor permeability above 6 m and capillary water absorption below 0.1 kg/m squared per square root hour.

Sourcing Notes

Construction sealants are dominated by major brands at OEM level: Dow Corning (now Dow), Sika, Wacker, Henkel, Momentive. For Chinese domestic construction, Bejing Zhongbao, Zhongtian, and other Chinese producers serve a large local market. International export typically requires GB + ASTM dual certification.

For silane water-repellent treatments, the chemistry is commoditized and Chinese-supplied silanes offer significant cost savings. Major brands include Wacker SILRES, Evonik Dynasylan, and Chinese equivalents.

For silicone-modified architectural coatings, both branded resins (Dow Q1-2530, Wacker SILRES, Evonik TEGO) and Chinese equivalents are widely available.
