SilMaterials in Glass Fiber
Silane coupling agents in glass-fiber sizing — KH-550 (amino), KH-560 (epoxy), KH-570 (methacryloxy), VTMOS (vinyl) — for resin-matrix bonding in composites.

Glass fiber for composite reinforcement is the largest single application of silane coupling agents globally. Each tonne of glass fiber consumes approximately 0.5-3.0 kg of silane (mostly amino, epoxy, methacryloxy, or vinyl silanes), making glass-fiber sizing the highest-volume silane application by far.
Glass-Fiber Sizing Chemistry
Glass-fiber sizing is applied during fiber drawing — the silane and other components are sprayed onto the freshly-formed fiber as it emerges from the bushing, before the fiber is collected onto winding tubes. The sizing serves multiple functions:
Adhesion to matrix resin: silane coupling agents (KH-550, KH-560, KH-570, VTMOS) form covalent bonds between the inorganic glass surface and the organic matrix resin, providing the interfacial bond strength that determines composite mechanical properties.
Fiber protection: film-formers (epoxy or PU emulsion at 1-5 wt% in sizing) coat the fibers to prevent abrasion damage during weaving, winding, and pultrusion.
Lubrication: polyethylene glycol, fatty acid, or specialty lubricants ease handling and prevent yarn breakage during processing.
Anti-static: quaternary ammonium compounds dissipate static charge buildup that would otherwise attract dust and cause processing defects.
Silane Selection by Glass Fiber Type
The choice of silane depends on the glass fiber's intended end-use:
- E-glass with epoxy or unsaturated polyester matrix: KH-550 (aminosilane) or KH-560 (epoxysilane) is standard
- E-glass with phenolic or melamine resin: KH-550 (aminosilane)
- E-glass with thermoplastics (PP, PA, PBT): APMS (aminopropyl-methyl-dimethoxysilane) or specialty grades
- E-glass with vinyl ester or BMC/SMC: KH-570 (methacryloxysilane)
- E-glass with peroxide-cured polyolefin: VTMOS or A-171 (vinylsilane)
- C-glass for chemical-resistant applications: KH-560 plus chemical-resistance modifiers
- High-strength S-glass: similar silane chemistry, more demanding film-former specifications
Specifications and Standards
Glass-fiber sizing specifications:
- Loss on Ignition (LOI): total sizing on glass, typically 0.3-1.5 wt% on fiber
- Silane content: 0.05-0.30 wt% on fiber (depends on application)
- Filament diameter: 9-24 μm typical for E-glass
- Tex (linear density): 33-2400 g/km depending on application
- TG / Strength: yarn or roving mechanical properties
Industry standards: ISO 1887 (LOI), ISO 1889 (linear density), ASTM D578 (glass-fiber yarn).
Major Glass Fiber Producers and Silane Sourcing
Major glass-fiber producers:
- Owens Corning, Jushi (China), CPIC (China), 3B-fibreglass (Belgium), Saint-Gobain Vetrotex
- Premium S-glass: Owens Corning Type 30, AGY S-2 Glass
Silane sourcing for sizing manufacturing is well-established. Major silane brands carry premium pricing for documented batch consistency: Dow Corning Z series, Momentive Silquest A-series, Evonik Dynasylan. Chinese-supplied silanes (KH-550, KH-560, KH-570) deliver equivalent technical performance at significant cost savings for commodity sizing applications.
