Construction Sealant Supply Chain

Silicone Sealants in Construction

Silicone sealants are the premier sealing material for high-performance construction — weather-resistant, UV-stable, and functional from −60°C to +200°C. Three main construction segments drive demand:

Curtain wall and structural glazing — High-rise facades bond glass panels to aluminium frames using structural silicone sealant (SSG). The bond must maintain tensile strength >0.6 MPa over 30+ years and withstand thermal cycling, wind load, and UV exposure.

Highway and bridge expansion joints — Two-part silicone sealants seal concrete expansion joints on motorways, bridges, and airport runways. They cure to an elastic solid (Shore A 15–35) that accommodates ±50% movement without cracking.

Residential and commercial glazing — RTV silicone seals window frames, bathroom tiles, HVAC penetrations, and metal roofing joints.

Calcium carbonate is the primary filler (up to 60 wt%), fumed silica reinforces one-part moisture-cure systems, and organotin or organotitanate catalysts drive crosslinking.

Sealant Types and Specifications

One-part (1K) acetoxy or neutral-cure RTV sealants are the dominant volume in residential/commercial. Two-part (2K) systems are preferred for structural glazing and highway joints where controlled cure speed and deeper section cure matter.

See the detailed Sealant Formulation page for raw material ratios, crosslinker selection, and processing conditions.
