Methyl-phenyl silicone resins serve as the char-forming binder in intumescent fire-protection coatings for structural steel. Under fire exposure, the silicone resin phase promotes char formation and insulates the steel substrate, extending the time before steel reaches critical temperature (550 °C) — achieving R30 to R120 fire ratings.
